Cuisinart CBK-100 Bread Machine Review

Our Overall Rating:

Bread is one of the most important part of many of millions of people’s diets and has been for thousands of years. Bread can come in an amazing variety of shapes and sizes and as many flavors. What you can add to bread is almost only limited by your imagination. It amazing that such a variety starts with three basic ingredients, wheat flour, water and yeast.

One problem with bread that it takes a lot of time and effort to make, one of the reasons why industrially made standard sliced loaves are so popular (in terms of sales, not taste) today. If you are getting fed up with bland mass produced bread and want to enjoy the many tastes and textures which bread can have then a very good option is to invest in a bread making appliance like the Cuisinart CBK-100 (see today's price). Then with very little time or effort on your part you can start opening up some of the many options that bread has to offer.

The Cuisinart CBK-100 allows you to one of 12 pre-programmed options to make a wide variety of different types of bread (or just the dough) and even make jams and chutneys to enjoy with your homemade bread. There is even a delay start option which allows you to add all the ingredients and then delay the making of the bread for up to 13 hours.

This means that if you want to wake in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread, you can without someone having to get up in the middle of the night to make it for you. And if you do not happen to be there when the bread is finished cooking, the Cuisinart CBK-100 will automatically switch over to keep warm mode for 1 hour to make sure that the bread does not get damp with condensation and keeps warm for you to eat.

The Cuisinart CBK-100 is a fully automatic bread maker that will bake either 1 lb., 1 ½ lb. or 2 lb. loaves (basically a small, medium or large size loaf) in a variety of styles. It measures 18 inches x 12 ¼ inches x 15 inches, it weighs (when empty of ingredients) 22 lbs. Externally the Cuisinart CBK-100 has 2 stay cool carrying handles, very useful if you want to move it out of the way once the bread has been baked and the bread maker not yet cooled down.

  • Basic or White bread option is to make a standard style white loaf using white flour.

  • The sweet bread setting adjusts to compensate for the higher amounts of fats and sugars in the bread.
  • Gluten Free setting, it is surprising that more bread makers do not have a gluten free settings. It only requires a small amount of factory programming and the bread maker can then be used by people with gluten intolerance.
  • Packaged Mix, this setting is specifically designed to give the best results from pre-packaged mixes.
  • Cake setting is for what is sometimes referred to as batter breads. Rather than use yeast to make them rise they use either baking powder, baking soda or eggs.
  • Dough setting is when you only want to make the dough and finish the shaping by hand, such as when you are making bread rolls or pizza bases. The dough is ready after it has had the first rise. It is then removes, shaped by hand and then has the second rise.
  • Pasta dough is mixed and kneaded in the bread maker and then removed and rested before rolling and shaping.
  • Jams, someone at one time indulged in a bit of lateral thinking and concluded that a bread maker with its constantly revolving mixing blade and it heating system could be used to made jams and chutneys.
  • Bake only, if you have pre made dough, the Cuisinart CBK-100 can be used on this setting to cook it. The bread maker can be set to cook in 10 minute increments.

Rapid bake is used when you want to bake a loaf of bread quicker than usual. You do need to use rapid rise yeast the on this setting. The rapid bake setting can be used on many different settings but it is only possible to have a medium colored crust and a 1 ½ lb. size loaf only.

If you want to add ingredients like nuts, fruit or shredded cheese, the Cuisinart CBK-100 pauses and a tone sounds to warn you to add the additional ingredients.

And when you have finished cooking your bread, the Cuisinart CBK-100’s bread tin and mixing blade can be cleaned in the dishwasher, unlike many other bread makers. The interior should just be wiped to remove and crumbs or spilt flour.

  • Choice of crust color – most of the bread making programs offer a choice of either a light, medium or dark crust

  • 13 hour delay option – the start of making the bread can be delayed for up to 13 hours

It is hard to find fault with the Cuisinart CBK-100. It is a well-designed bread maker that is easy and straightforward to use. The control panel has all the options laid out clearly and it is quite instinctive to use. Unlike many other bread makers the bread baking pan and the mixing paddle can be cleaned in the dish washer after use. The inside of the Cuisinart CBK-100 just needs a simple wipe out to remove any crumbs or spilled ingredients. To assist with this the lid is detachable.

The stainless steel outer is just cleaned with a damp cloth. The only minor blemish on the Cuisinart CBK-100 package is the enclosed cook book which uses inaccurate cup measures for flour (as do most other bread maker cook books). When it comes to making bread users really like their Cuisinart CBK-100. It is the 3rd bestselling bread maker on Amazon and, from 1,000 customer reviews, roughly 81% of people who left a review rating it as either very good or good. Looking at the user manual for the Cuisinart CBK-100 many of the negative reviews, that often note the quality of the bread that is made, could be put down to the quantities of ingredients.
